I remember at the end of last year I found out about Florian Eatery from TimeOut’s Bar & Restaurant Revive Awards. They were nominated as one of the best cafes in 2021 despite that they had just opened in March of that same year. At the time, I honestly never heard their name, but after looking at their story and their Instagram Page, I quickly put them on my ‘need to visit’ list.
FLORIAN EATERY
Located in the Rathdowne Village in North Carlton, Florian Eatery is owned by Dom Gattermayr and Rose Richards. They opened the eatery in early 2021, and they’ve been impressing customers with their delicious food ever since. Their menu includes both traditional Australian-style dishes with some international twists to it. They all are made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients where the suppliers are only within 10 kilometers from the joint.
Me, Billy, and a couple more friends decided to come and visit Florian on a Saturday morning. Our friends arrived around 10 AM and they said that there was already a line to get a seat inside. Luckily, they finally got a table for four after 20 minutes of waiting, and we arrived not too long after that. Since we’re in between breakfast and lunch, we decided to order a couple of items from each of their menus.

The breakfast menu at Florian Eatery is sure to please any appetite. To start, Billy had a croissant with butter & jam both of which were such a delicious pair. The croissant was flaky and crunchy on the outside, yet soft on the inside, the jam was not overwhelmingly sweet, and the cold preserves butter just made it all complete, it was very simple but can never go wrong.

Dulshan opted for the poached eggs which he claimed were perfectly cooked, and the sourdough toast that came from family bakery, Austro, which specializes in Austrian-style bread was a great accompaniment too.

Xuan on the other hand, ordered the herb & gruyere omelette. She said the French-style omelette was very filling and hearty, while the green leaves added a nice touch of color and freshness to the dish.

For the lunch menu, Billy picked the braised ox tongue. I tried some of it and the ox tongue was tender and cooked nicely. Although I’d prefer eating ox tongue in a Gyu Tan Don form, but this one is definitely a great experience to try and the deviled sauce added a good touch of flavour to the dish too. The sprouted lentil and watercress salad was also a great choice- light but felt very nutritious.

Last but not least, for my lunch, I got myself the poached octopus. I fell in love with this dish when I first saw it on their Instagram page, and at that moment I knew I just had to have it. It was on the pricier side, but it was honestly the winning dish of the day! Octopus is a tricky one to cook, but mine was cooked to perfection. And although I’m not a fan of beans, the borlotti beans were needed in this particular dish, because they did go really well with the delicious butter sauce & the broccoli leaf.

The atmosphere in here is warm and inviting. Despite the fact that the space is rather cramped and people are always streaming in and out, They’re able to create this personal feel that draws you to want to stay a bit longer so you can enjoy the bustle of this business’s activity. The waitresses are always busy running the place, but always have patience and a smile while serving the customers.
I didn’t take photos of our drink that day, but we did get coffees while we were having our feast. They’re using AllPress coffee, a notable brand that started in New Zealand, but also has its coffee roaster locally here in Collingwood. I had worked with AllPress before, and I do love the boldness of the flavour in their espresso blend. I tried their batch brew the first time at Florian, and it was actually quite a hit, I liked it.
Overall, Florian is definitely a great choice for breakfast or lunch in North Carlton. They’ve only been open for a year but they’re already making a name for themselves in the Melbourne food scene.
The food is healthy and wholesome, everything was cooked to perfection and tasted even better than it looked. It’s no surprise that Florian has quickly become one of the most popular spots around the area. The space is intimate yet buzzing, and the service is great. If you’re ever in Carlton North, be sure to check them out!

Hey there! I know this is kinda off topic but I was
wondering which blog platform are you using for this website?
I’m getting fed up of WordPress because I’ve had issues with hackers and I’m looking at alternatives for another
platform. I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
Hello laurangelia.com webmaster, Great post!
