On the outskirts of North Melbourne, there’s a new kid on the block that caught my eye called The Flour. This cute little bake shop has become a gem in North Melbourne’s lively café scene, adding even more charm to the suburb’s reputation as a go-to destination for coffee lovers and food enthusiasts like us. Back in February, Kayli brought me there to check it out, as I was curious to see how it stacks up with the other amazing cafés around.

Story
It all began with April Yoonhee Bae, an exceptionally talented pastry chef, who embarked on her journey into the online-only bakery business in 2017. She gained immense success by crafting and selling her irresistible canelés to her online customers, as well as supplying to numerous cafes. Fortunately, this is merely the beginning of their story. Fast forward to 2023, April joined forces with her husband, Harry Hyun-suk Go, who not only possesses exceptional barista skills but also holds global recognition as an award-winning professional in his field. Together, they have united their expertise and passion to establish The Flour Patisserie & Cafe.
How To Get There
The Flour is located between the rim of North & West Melbourne, and fairly easy to get to. If you love riding the tram, both trams 58 and 57 have stops conveniently close by, right at Victoria St / Peel St. Just a short, breezy stroll from there, and you’ll arrive. The sign of the shop is a bit subtle, I almost strolled past the place without noticing. But I guess the charm of Melbourne’s best find is always low-key hidden, isn’t it?
Ambiance
The Flour’s ambiance gives a welcoming vibe, it’s like sitting in the living room of your favorite relative’s humble abode; it’s a warm comforting home away from home. With enough room to accommodate about 18-20 people, it’s a perfect spot for catching up with friends or spending a relaxing afternoon with coffee and some baked goods.
Upon stepping into The Flour Cafe, I could see this range of cookies, caneles, brettones, sliced cakes, and dacquoises decked out the counter display – each one calling out my name, they were looking so good! I’ve read somewhere that April baked all this herself and she’s doing it daily so that everything is fresh.
I set my eyes on the dacquoise, one of my favorite pastries ever! And I just couldn’t resist myself, the last time I’d had a dacquoise was at Bench Coffee Co Little Collins, and it was a while back, so I’ve got to have it this time.
Menu
When it came to the menu, The Flour Cafe has it pretty simple. They’ve got your usual espresso or milk-based coffee options, an array of filter coffee options, Harry’s Fizzy signature coffee sour, and a range of loose-leaf teas to match your chosen pastry. Prices? Pretty reasonable if you ask me. The drinks are priced starting from $4.5, and the pastries range from $6 to $7.9. Perfect for treating yourself without breaking the bank.
Coffee
As a former barista, I can tell you that their coffee offerings are more than just ‘nice.’ In particular, their filter brew selections caught my attention – they have an impressive variety of options that you can order including Colombia El Diviso Sidra, Ethiopia Uraga, Uganda Anaerobic, and even the exotic Panama Auromar Firestone Geisha. You usually only get this kind of coffee lineup in a big specialty coffee shop, not in a bakery.
What I also find fascinating is that The Flour roasts all their beans in-house, a testament to Harry Hyun-suk Go’s true passion and dedication to his craft. This commitment to quality and control over the roasting process undoubtedly contributes to the exceptional flavors of their coffee. So now I’m left with ‘no option’ but to try their amazing filter coffee option then? 🙂
Overall, both my filter coffee & the dacquoise were overall great that day, and they were a lovely pairing too. I can’t wait to go back and try more pastries and coffees in here. I definitely would recommend you to visit The Flour if you’re looking for a great coffee, tea, and an elevated French pastries spot.
