Today’s adventure is brought to you by my good ‘ol friend Megawati. I was just finishing up my shift at Gordon when she texted me saying that she’s at Good Measure, a new coffee shop in Carlton. She told me that the place is cute, and that I should join her if I wasn’t doing anything, but little did she know that I was already sold when she said ‘it’s a new coffee shop’.
Pardon me if I never described how I feel whenever someone says, ‘there’s a new coffee shop’. Well, let me tell you now, the feeling is called BEYOND ECSTATIC!
Angelia, 2021
Getting to Good Measure from the CBD wasn’t exactly as easy as just jumping into a tram and then you’re there. I had to catch a tram up towards Swanston St, and then walked to Lygon street, where it’s notorious for being the home of Italian delicacy. I did take a wrong turn once, but after five minutes gluing my eyeballs on Google Map, I finally arrived at the premises, yay!
Meg sat in front of the bar as I came in, she was sipping her second coffee like a champ. I quickly looked around the joint and to my surprise, Good Measure is giving me such retro vibes, in a good way. I would say 25 should be the maximum capacity inside of this establishment, but I heard from one of the baristas, they’re going to expand the space further down to the back area and swap the cafe into a beer & wine bar at night!
That definitely explains why there are so many taps on the wall, and why the bar set-up seems more appropriate for a cocktail bar rather than a coffee shop, I really thought they’re purely decorative! Another thing that I thought was decorative is the record player! But na-ah, it’s totally real and it’s working, in fact, they actually use it to play the music in Good Measure. Cool!
At the time I was at Good Measure, it was scorching hot outside, and as soon as I sat in the bar, the first thing that the barista asked me was if I wanted still or sparkling water. I know that in most cafes this is a standard thing to do, but kudos to the team for being speedy, because I was dying for thirst. Oh, did I also mention that they served sparkling on tap? Amazing!
Visiting a new coffee shop in town, of course wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t order a coffee. I scanned around the coffee bar trying to find out which roasters that they go for, and I found that they went with Code Black Coffee, which is one of my favorite, fantastic! I asked Meg what did she order, she said she had their filter coffee and a Mont Blanc. Whoa, wait, say that again?

Apparently, Mont Blanc is one of Good Measure’s signature cold drinks. It’s a filter coffee based iced drink, with dark sugar, a layer of cream, and a hint of freshly shaved orange zest & nutmeg on top. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, I didn’t order that because I was a bit traumatized by having a creamy liquid on top of my iced coffee drink, so I went for their Iced Vanilla Latte instead and I did not regret it at all!
This is definitely not the first time that I had an iced vanilla latte, but this is the first time that I had a ‘WOW’ moment with it. Everything about it was super balanced, the coffee was well extracted, it has a well-balanced ratio between the ice, the milk, the vanilla, and the sugar too. It’s really up there, honestly.
I’m a little bit bumped at myself because at the time, I was more focusing on my vlog, so I didn’t really put that much thought into getting good photos of the space or the drinks in Good Measure, which I greatly regret. At the time of my visit, it was kind of packed as well, so I felt a bit shy and I didn’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable with my camera presence.

But I found some really nice photos on Instagram which could fill the void that I’m lacking here, and luckily, I got the owner’s permission to post the photos on the blog too! So I’m going to link her Instagram Account here if you want to check more of her beautiful photos on the platform. And thank you again, Nahm for your kind contribution to the blog!

Overall, I love Good Measure! I love every little detail that they put into the setup of this space, the interior design, the nice plants, the record player, the Dyson cooler, the Weber grinder, the sparkling water on the tap, even the cloth towel instead of paper towel in the toilet, things in here do feel bougie and intentional.

And of course, the menu. Although I’ve only tried their Iced Vanilla Latte, from sitting at the bar, I could see that they are serious with their craft. They measure out their drinks, and they’re passionate when talking about the menu and the business in general. So I’m definitely going to be back for some more. I wanted to try their famous Mont Blanc next, alongside their yummy-looking Hot Dogs!
That’s all I got for you today, thank you for reading the blog, comment down below what you think about Good Measure, and I’ll see you on my next blog post! xo
