If you’re looking for a great new cafe to check out in North Melbourne, Baguette Studios is definitely worth a visit. I’ve heard good things about them for a while, but I was pretty hesitant to go because I’m not really into bread. I finally decided to go there last weekend with my boyfriend, and it turned out to be one of the best lunches I’ve had in 2022!
Baguette Studios
Baguette Studios is located on Wreckryn Street, which can easily be reached by a tram ride. Take number 58 or 59 towards North Melbourne, and it will take you to a tram stop just walking distance to the cafe. Unfortunately we arrived 30 minutes before their closing hours (promise it wasn’t intentional), so we were extremely short on time, but nonetheless, the service and the meal that was served to us was nothing short of exceptional.
From what I’ve learned, Baguette Studios is run by Aileen Seo, a Pastry Chef; Jiho Sur (her brother), a Chef; and Paul Kwan (her spouse), a baker, all of whom have significant knowledge and experience in their own areas of expertise. Baguette Studios itself is known to specialize in French-style cuisine with a touch of Korean flavor & Australian cafe culture influence.
When we arrived at the cafe, I was quite impressed by how chic the space looked. It’s simple, yet modern and clean. They have a long bench where it connects the coffee bar and the cashier that runs along one wall, and their open bread showcase is directly behind it. They also have another bread display inside a glass cabinet beneath the till.
Their menu is very simple and straightforward; they only serve five sandwich options and one special weekend menu. As someone who’s not big on bread, I instantly picked their weekend special menu at the time, which was the Scampi Bisque, whereas Billy went for the Grilled Three Cheese Sandwich. We didn’t get any coffee at the time, because we were planning on hopping on somewhere else, but their coffee is by Inglewood Coffee Roasters.
Scampi BISque ($30)
Homemade bisque sauce, cherry tomato, scampi, toasted sourdough
This Scampi Bisque is really a real stunner. I don’t think I’ve had lunch this good in years. The soup was heavenly delicious and creamy, it was really packed with flavor and the chunk of cherry tomatoes really adds a sweet touch to it. The scampi itself was cooked perfectly, and the toast that came with the dish was crispy and fresh. This Scampi Bisque is definitely a dish that I will be ordering time and time again.
Grilled three cheese sandwich ($14.5)
The Grilled Three Cheese Sandwich comes on sourdough toast with emmental, gruyere and cheddar cheese, caramelized onion jam and horseradish mayo. The cheese was melted to perfection, the onion jam added a lovely sweetness to it and the horseradish mayo gave the sandwich a bit of a kick. When you bite into it, all the flavor really complement each other wonderfully.
Overall, I was really happy with my experience at Baguette Studios. It is the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch and definitely a cafe worth checking out if you’re in the North Melbourne area. The food is exceptional, and the service was great too. I’m definitely looking forward to coming back for more of their weekend special and also trying their coffee too!
